Ohio <<return to state

The Central Appalachians region of Ohio is home to the oldest and most biologically diverse forest systems in North America. These forests contain more than 80 tree species, including the most primitive forms of flowering plants: the tulip tree and magnolias. This vast landscape sustains our communities in many ways: economically, culturally, and environmentally. Many of the things we value, however, may be at risk from adverse impacts of climate change. Understanding and managing the impacts of climate change on the Central Appalachians’ diverse forests will help us maintain their many benefits.

A key step to understanding the potential impacts of climate change in the Central Appalachians region is conducting a vulnerability assessment. The Central Appalachians Forest Ecosystem Vulnerability Assessment (2015) is now available online as a General Technical Report. For more information, contact Patricia Butler.
